Volunteer Committee Descriptions

Due to the nature of golf and the complex setup of a major golf tournament, it takes over 2,000 volunteers to help with the operations from crowd control to scoring to helping the professional golfers in various ways. Learn more about the different positions and jobs available to volunteer.

Administrative Support

Staff Liaison: Monica Villarreal

Assist the tournament staff with general office tasks and logistics. You must be invited by this committee.

As spectators and fans arrive to the Valero Texas Open, you will provide one of the first interactions with guests. With your help, greeting everyone with Texas hospitality is only going to jumpstart the spectators’ experience! The Admissions committee is responsible for ensuring that all guests are admitted onto the tournament grounds with the correct credentials. You’re the tour guide for the Valero Texas Open by joining this exclusive team. Requirements for this committee are, but not limited to standing for long periods of time and the ability to provide tournament information and directions with a warm and friendly welcoming to spectators.

Having enthusiastic and friendly volunteers that bring the Southern Hospitality to life are essential for our Ambassadors. Volunteers will be stationed various locations strategically placed around the golf course. You’ll be responsible for interacting with spectators by answering their questions and helping them locate players, using the PGA TOUR app on their smart device. As an ambassador, you provide a resourceful voice during the tournament which is essential for the Valero Texas Open to run smoothly.

Broadcast Services

The Broadcast committee works directly with NBC/Golf Channel Broadcasts as on-the-course spotters, scorers, and get to announce tee-shots. Getting up close and personal with all the PGA TOUR players and inside the rope access to the exclusive TPC San Antonio are just a few small perks with being a part of the Broadcast Committee. Who wouldn’t want to watch and broadcast golf all four days of the tournament? You must be able to walk course and be very familiar with golf etiquette and rules. Important: You MUST be able to work all four (4) days during Broadcast (Thursday – Sunday). You must be invited by this committee.

Caddie Services

The Caddie Services Team is the liaison between professional caddies and tournament officials. As team members, we make the Caddie Lounge an outstanding hospitality venue for caddies to dine, prepare for their day, relax pre and post rounds and socialize with other caddies. Our responsibilities include organizing, assembling, distributing, collecting and sorting caddie bibs to be used for Valero’s Pro-Am experiences and official tournament play. We are committed to providing Texas hospitality and superior customer service, enhancing the caddies Valero Texas Open experience.

Community Relations - Charity

Staff Liaison: Stephanie Sage

Do you have a big heart for helping charities? As a part of the Community Relations-Charity committee you can help manage the Donation Stations located at the main spectator and VIP entrances selling official Valero Texas Open Fiesta medals with proceeds going to a charity of choice participating in Champions fore Charity. There are some other behind the scenes opportunities to help charities throughout the year.

Competition Support: (formerly ShotLink) Location Based Operators

Experience the Valero Texas Open from inside the ropes! The Competition Support: Location Based Operators committee is responsible for measuring and recording the location and distance of every shot hit during the tournament using the ShotLink scoring system. The measurements enable real-time distance data and statistics to be delivered to scoreboards, TV broadcasts, the internet, and mobile device applications. Volunteers on this committee are assigned to one of three roles: Laser Operators, Tablet Operators, and Rovers. It requires a basic knowledge of the game of golf, as well as a commitment to timeliness, accuracy, and attention to detail.

Laser Operators use a laser rangefinder to track the landing position of shots on and around the fairway. Laser operators are stationed on a fairway and should be physically able to stand at their laser position for the duration of their shift in potentially varied weather conditions. Laser operators should be comfortable with technology and focused on capturing data in a timely but accurate manner. ** Shift time is approximate and depends on tee times, weather and play. A minimum of three (3) shifts total - one training shift (1) and two (2) regular shifts are required for this committee.

Tablet Operators use a handheld tablet device to plot the ending position of shots around the green and to validate the accuracy of shots recorded by the ShotLink+ camera system on the green. This important function of the ShotLink scoring system enables real-time distance data and statistics to be delivered to scoreboards, TV broadcast, internet and mobile device applications. It requires a basic knowledge of the game of golf, as well as a commitment to timeliness, accuracy, and attention to detail. Tablet operators are expected to be mobile and walk around the fairways or greens as necessary to gain an accurate insight into ball location. Tablet operators should be physically fit, capable of standing/walking for the duration of their shift in a variety of weather conditions. A one-hour online training course and an additional one-hour in-person training session prior to tournament week are required. On-course training Wednesday of tournament week is required and volunteers should be available to work for at least two tournament days.

Rovers are responsible for providing support to the Location Based Operators on a specific golf hole, to provide breaks, answer questions, and provide assistance as needed.

These positions require a one-hour online training course, a one-hour in-person training session, and on-course training on Wednesday of tournament week. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and must sign a Disclosure Form. This committee works all-day shifts outside.

Competition Support: Spotters

Formerly a responsibility of Marshals, volunteers in the Spotters committee will work inside the ropes and assist fellow Location-Based Operators in locating player's shots in and around the fairways, or greens and identifying situations where players’ shots may be obstructed. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and must sign a Disclosure Form. This Committee works all-day shifts outside.

Competition Support: Transport Group

Volunteers will be needed to drive shuttle carts taking and picking up volunteers for Walking Scorers, Spotters, Laser Based Operators and Standard Bearers to their assigned holes on the course. They will also assist in the delivery of meals as needed. There will be two shifts options: morning 6AM - 1PM or afternoon 1PM - 7:30PM. Times can vary based on tee times. Wednesday, March 30 will be a training day for familiarization of the carts and the course. Volunteers should have knowledge of the course layout.

Competition Support: Walking Scorers

Chair: Chuck Rosales

The Walking Scorers committee will walk 18 holes inside the ropes with the professional golfers and requires mental and physical stamina, attention to detail, and a thorough understanding of the game of golf. Volunteers accompany a group of up to 3 players in order to keep their score, track specific statistics, and provide real-time data capture that informs all aspects of the ShotLink system. Walking scorers should have the physical ability to easily keep pace with their group across all 18 holes without a break and in varying weather conditions. For reference 18 holes will vary from 5-6 miles or roughly 10,000 steps. They should be comfortable using a handheld digital device to record each shot, as well as the voice radio with a headset that allows for constant communication with the ShotLink staff. Walking Scorers should have an excellent knowledge of golf. Walking Scorer volunteers are required to complete a 1-hour online training course, a 1-hour in-person training that occurs prior to tournament week and should be available for the Wednesday pro-am and at least two additional tournament days. Walking scorer and laser training is required. Scorers will also participate in one Laser shift. Wednesday is required for ALL walking scorer volunteers. By invite or referral needed to be a part of this committee.

Volunteers need to be positive, happy people. Outgoing personalities are a plus. Need to be able to stand and walk on grass for long periods of time including the duration of the concert. The Concert committees’ volunteer opportunities range from ambassadors/information, hospitality hosts, admissions, merchandise booth, and setup/tear down. There will be volunteer opportunities prior to Saturday and after the concert. Committee volunteers will need to do some setup prior to the concert. They will tear down immediately following the concert. The volunteer times on day of concert are fluid based on how long play runs and weather delays. The concert will happen rain or shine.

Dash to the VTO

Staff Liaison: Hannah Fleager

Assist with various duties, relating to the Dash to the VTO 5k & 1-mile race including registration, course monitors, gear check, manning water stations, etc. The race is the Saturday prior to Valero Texas Open week.


Chair: Brian Thayer

Do you want to watch some of the PGA TOUR’s best compete? Can you be ready to act on a moment’s notice? If you can answer yes to these questions, then the Evacuation committee may be for you. In the event of inclement weather or a suspension of play, we need assistance directing PGA TOUR players to their designated evacuation carts and making sure they are ready for use their use, and possibly lead a group of players in. You must be at least 18 years of age with a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance. Previous experience driving a golf cart is also required. Also, you must attend the evacuation routes training session the week before the tournament. The days needed for this position include the weekend prior to the tournament (to deploy golf carts on course), Monday-Sunday of tournament week, and Sunday after play or Monday morning after the tournament (to remove carts from course). During tournament week, the shifts are full day shifts.

Exhibitor Services

Who doesn’t love getting swag items from attending events? As part of the Exhibitor Services committee, you’ll work with numerous sponsoring companies at the exciting Main Entrance, The Backyard area, and other possible locations on the golf course with loading in and out of the expo spaces. Patrolling this area by keeping it clean and organized throughout tournament week is crucial. You’ll may also help exhibitors hand out swag items, tournament “party favors”, and help local businesses flourish during tournament week and beyond.

Gallery Management (formerly Gallery Control)

This committee consists of three groups: On Course Marshals, Roving Marshals and Gallery Management Transport Group. Gallery Management is responsible for assuring spectator safety while promoting spectator enjoyment of the tournament; assuring players and caddies have unencumbered movement throughout the course of play; assuring that proper decorum is maintained by players, caddies and spectators on the course; and assisting with volunteer committee transportation around the course. Gallery Management is one of the most visible committees at the tournament and will have the ability to enjoy outside ropes access.

NOTE: Golf knowledge, flexibility and exceptional customer service skills are beneficial and preferred. You must be able to stand for long periods of time and walk in hot/humid conditions. Gallery Management volunteers are required to register for shifts Wednesday through Sunday of tournament week. Gallery Management volunteers must register for a minimum of 12 hours; and additional hours highly encouraged. To be eligible for one round of golf, you must complete a minimum of 18 hours. Shifts for Gallery Management will be available on a first come, first served basis.

Help us share hospitality with our sponsors, VIPs and spectators in some of the premier viewing areas around TPC San Antonio. The Hospitality committee provides a friendly, welcoming experience for guests as they arrive to the entrances of our hospitality venues throughout the course, checking for proper credentials, scanning their tickets, and wrist banding them. Once guests are inside the venue, committee members help folks have an enjoyable time by helping them find a seat, navigating them to the bar, food buffets, service areas and even pointing them to the restrooms when necessary. Of course, we always want to remind our guests to be mindful of the competition taking place and politely quiet the crowds when noise levels escalate.

Media Services

Chair: Scott Noel

The Media Services committee helps to ensure that local and national media have the support needed to produce the groundbreaking stories about the tournament. You’ll help monitor media personnel to make sure they have a proper working environment and provide gracious Texas hospitality to enhance the experience of all members of the media while at the Valero Texas Open. Having previous experience working in the media areas at other PGA TOUR, PGA TOUR CHAMPIONS or Korn Ferry Tour events is appreciated for this committee.

Off-Site Transportation

The Off-Site Transportation committee provides transportation for the professional players, their families and Tournament VIPs. This comes with the small benefit of getting personable with some of the players and caddies participating in the Valero Texas Open, which some would say, is a once in a lifetime experience. However, this committee requires some driving in congested areas and knowledge of San Antonio’s city roads. Volunteers must be at least 25 years of age, have a valid driver’s license, and proof of insurance and be able to provide this information prior to the tournament.

Operations - Strike Force (formerly Rapid Response)

Do you enjoy working with tools? Do you feel gratification in building things with your hands? Do you like jumping in to help someone in need? The Operations – Strike Force committee will assist with various set-up projects onsite at TPC San Antonio and help other committees when needed. One day you may be placing fencing for crowd control and the next you might be performing light construction work. Every day working with this group may be different. This committee requires walking, standing, heavy lifting, and familiarity with common hand tools. Join this committee to see the daily operational processes that goes into creating a top-scale PGA TOUR tournament. Help for this is needed late March through late April.

Everyone gets excited to attend the Valero Texas Open and their very first interaction takes place with our Parking committee as guests park their vehicle and get shuttled to the tournament grounds. You’ll assist setting up, keeping clean, and tearing down parking lots. As vehicles enter the lots, you’ll assist in verifying parking passes, then directing guests where to park according to the loading plan for each parking lot. The various lots will be designated for one, some or all our various patrons including: vendors, volunteers, sponsors, and spectators.

Player Services

Here’s your chance to assist with social activities, childcare, transportation, reservations, and special needs for PGA TOUR players and their families. Potentially gaining a strong connection with player’s families could be a transforming experience for the Player Services volunteers. Having strong interpersonal skills and that outgoing Southern Texas charm is needed along with the ability to be flexible and accommodating during tournament week. Registration is by invitation only. Registration is by invitation only.

Practice Facility

Chair: Brian Gutierrez
Vice Chair: Jerry Cavazos

The Practice Facility committee is responsible for the set up & tear down of the practice facility and the day-to-day operations of the driving range, putting green, chipping green and the surrounding spectator areas. As PGA TOUR professionals enter and exit the range, volunteers will be responsible for setting up nameplates that identify each player, along with providing the players golf balls and general assistance. Marshaling of the area and crowd control will be required, as well as, allowing properly credentialed people in the area. Knowledge of the players is helpful, but not necessary. This position works outside all day and volunteers must be comfortable with and prepared for all weather conditions. Volunteers are needed from Monday through Sunday of tournament week and will be staffed from 6:00 AM until 7:30 PM each day.

Pro Vehicles

Vice Chair: Michael Forkenbrock

The Pro Vehicles committee assists with staging of courtesy vehicles at the airport, private terminals, and at the golf course. You’ll greet players and families arriving at the airport, conduct quick administrative documentation, and assist with the loading of luggage for the players and their families. Additionally, you’ll assist players with the return of the vehicles when departing. This committee is stationed and works from the San Antonio airport. You must be at least 25 years old and be able to provide a valid driver license, and proof of insurance to the tournament office. This committee requires some lifting of luggage and some late hours. The setup starts the week before the tournament and the returning of vehicles a day or so after the tournament ends.

As a part of the Pro-Am committee, you’ll assist with the set-up of Pro-Am gift distribution, Pro-Am registration, Pro-Am welcome parties, and Pro-Am tournaments. You must be able to stand for long periods of time with occasional moderate lifting. Days required: Saturday (March 19). Saturday – Thursday (March 26 –31) and Friday - Saturday (April 1 - 2).

Pro/VIP Shuttles

As a part of the Pro/VIP Shuttles committee, you’ll shuttle players, caddies and VIPs using multi-passenger golf carts. You must be at least 18 years of age with a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance. Previous experience driving a golf cart is also required.

Promotional Street Team

Staff Liaison: Hannah Fleager

Do you enjoy talking to new people at events? As a part of the Promotional Street Team you’ll assist with advertising and promoting the Valero Texas Open at various events throughout San Antonio. You will also be able to assist with social media content and fan engagement opportunities during tournament week. The greatest needs for help are from November through June. HELP NEEDED YEAR ROUND.

Like to help quench the thirst of guests? With Refreshers, you can supply various locations on and off course with food and beverages to tournament guests. Some heavy lifting and working in hot & humid conditions come with the job but is most appreciated by everyone.

Standard Bearers

Chair: Mike Pheanis
Vice Chair: Dennis Solis

Enjoy walking and carrying a sign for an entire round of golf (approximately 4.5 to 6.5 hours) when assisting with the Standard Bearers. You must be at least 16 years old and have a knowledge of the game of golf. You’ll have inside the ropes access as you walk 18 holes on the TPC San Antonio Oaks Course. Standard Bearers must work a minimum of three rounds, at least two of those rounds must be on Wednesday, Thursday and/or Friday. Another area to assist that does not require walking the course is the Standard Bearers Operations Volunteer where volunteers can drive golf carts, build signs, etc. Time could fluctuate at the beginning or end of your shift. Your committee chair will contact you with your shifts.

Volunteer Services

The Volunteer Services committee is needed to take care of our valued volunteers. You will oversee the volunteer food presentation and distribution; keep the volunteer tent clean, organized and inviting for volunteers seeking respite throughout the day. Additionally, you’ll use a computer or iPad to scan barcodes to check volunteers in and out for their shifts. You’ll help create and maintain a volunteer registration process and help distribute volunteers’ badges and uniforms a few weeks prior to tournament. Energetic and very friendly personalities are welcomed for this committee. Standing for long periods of time and heavy lifting are required at times. Periods of non-activity due to volunteers shift schedules may occur.
